1) How I feel about this character:

*Looks at my Fernator Au* do you think I'm normal about this plant. Do you. Do you really.

On serious note - I adore it. The fact it's in Confusion ending it's perfect. How it is made to be an important detail, forgotten later by the narrative. The fsct we have to study it, the music cutoff.

Its foreshadowing without payback. And I love it.

I'll now ramble a bit about Fernator AU cus I missed it KEHSHDH

As I discussed in my Fernator theory post, nature seems to pay a bit role in the game. Ferns are placed in both the Freedom ending and the Memory Zone. They're always at an important key element of the main story, at least to the Narrator. And later, in Bucket destroyer ending, Fern is amongst "Stanley's friends". Because it's that! It's friendliness! The Freedom ending, while ironic, is supposed to give Stanley some freedom Narrator made. And Memory Zone is their safe spot from the story. It's an important area to him. So, while it's not in our face - fern, in a way, does have a meaningful role to play in the story. That's why my first ever AU was Fernator. Narrator wants to mean something. He is important to the story - because without him, there would be noone to tell it. But he's also Stanley's friend. Most of the game can be a study of his character and psyche.

So yeah. Adore the fella sm

*stares at my Fernator AU* lord, what can I say. It IS freedom. It is insanity. It's another 'living' being of the game. It's more important, at least to me, than to many. It's there for a specific reason - confuse. And be memorable. But the fact it's spread around the game gets to me. There is no way Narrator doesn't make the human-made vs nature-made comparison. It's so cool.

5) One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

That I would have finished projects for my Fernator AU ngl to u boss KSHENAHEJWHSH /silly

I still can't believe It ™️ is not an arrow. We literally fooled each other sm djehhshs

I LOVE IT™️. the yellow paint thing in games can get obnoxious sometimes and just how The Line ™️ started living it's own life was so awesome. How It ™️ was intruding through the environment. I'm a big fan of non human characters, and It ™️ had just so much personality thanks to the swirls and the music. Amazing.

2) All the people I ship romantically with this character

Never thought about it much. Stanley maybe? And the Tape guy. Could be silly. Or maybe some of the sliders 432 makes us do.

People see It ™️ as an animal, often as a dog. I see It ™️ as a being beyond that. It's so interesting that It ™️ moves when we are not looking. It ™️ travels between the blinks. I love It ™️ as something stuck on walls and floors. Maybe It ™️ can talk to stickers.

It ™️ is playful but I feel The Line ™️ in a way cares about Stanley. Similarly to how I view 432.

5) One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

It would be cool to see The Line ™️ in the epilogue ngl,, but again. I adore the current form of the game and wouldn't have changed anything.

HIIII OMG TYSM FOR ASKING!!! This was actually kinda tough(especially Medea), I think all of them are so caught up in their own dramas that a vacation seems so far away- this might be the one time I'm writing them happy and taking a break LMAO

MEDEA

Best of luck trying to get them to take a vacation. Would rather chew glass than feel like she’s out somewhere enjoying herself while people need her. Because of this, I don’t think they’d ever go of their own accord but they CAN be convinced by a friend or a lover.

On the vacation itself, I don’t think they’d have much of a preference. I feel like Medea would enjoy quieter more rural places than bustling cities but enjoys art and architecture so much that they might brave a place like fantasy Florence.

Really hard to make her let loose but after she does she spends all her time taking photos and buys trinkets things from every place you visit. Has a big shelf at home where she keeps them all, it’s one of the only things she has the energy to dust semi-regularly.

Gets way too attached to street dogs and cats and cries a little when they have to leave the cat they kept seeing around the place you guys were staying at.

Gets homesick very quickly.

ATTIS

CAN. NOT. PICK. A. SINGLE. PLACE. He’s thrilled to be going somewhere away from his duties but is 100% paralyzed from having to choose. Gets carsick (carriage sick? horse sick?) extremely easily and has to have pee breaks every half hour.

Has a preference for beaches and more social/extroverted places. The highlight of every trip is the food and the drinks. Has a knack for befriending locals and tryhards at it so much it’s kinda pathetic.

Tries to learn how to surf. Fails miserably.

Despite being a pain in the ass, he prefers to travel in groups instead of alone or just with one person. Happy to stay at whatever the fantasy equivalent of an airbnb just having a cookout (churrasco) and playing cards (truco) (he actually hits people during truco and yells so loud you swear this is why the locals hate him).

Tries everything he can get his hands on. Goes on the sketchiest of motorcycle tours and eats the weirdest seafood combos.

Always remembers to buy a little souvenir for his sister.

BOREA

I’ve said this before but Borea is THE nerd of the nation. Her idea of a vacation is just to have enough time to read up on specific magic books that aren’t for work.

Although, she would love to travel to other places, especially places with a lot of historical sites and the such. If she were to ever visit Vesuvia again I’d imagine she’d enjoy touring the collusium and learning all of it’s bloody past. Because of her being in Vesuvia during the red plague (which is how she knows Asra and the MC) I feel like she’d be a bit aloof despite her enjoyment.

If she ever goes somewhere else she WILL be the type of person to meticulously plan every day by the hour and get slightly upset if it doesn’t go as she thought it would. If you go to an amusement park with her your going on at least 6 high tier rides before lunch. Optimizing queen.

LOVES TRAVELLING BY BOAT. Before her parents both decided to become posh diplomats, they were a predominately fisherman family and so some of her best childhood memories involve taking the boat out and watching the sun rise. Is content to just kinda cruise around on a fishing boat, going from neighboring country to country and reading all day.

Would enjoy going to a colder place just because she likes fashion that’s warmer but likes tropical climate best either way.

shes a drow, grew up in the underdark until she was in her mid teens when she ran away. her parents were lolth sworn but shes not, tho shes not seldarine either she just doesnt care about all that that much. but she kind of misses how pretty (and less sunny) the underdark was, and while she doesnt particularly approve of lolth sworn culture shes still incredibly defensive of it when surface races start talking shit

like me she cant see shit without her glasses, and those were broken during a fight. she didnt have to suffer for long bc volos Magical Glass Eye can see perfectly, but she always has her left eye squinting or closed. and she has cat pupils because i think cat pupils are cool

as drow do she has naturally white hair but she dyes the longer part of her mullet thingy all sorts of different colors

has a bunch of scars, most notably the ones from astarion biting her all the time. she was supposed to have tattoos on her neck and arms too but i just realized i forgot to draw them 😞 F

i gave her levels in fighter but thats mostly just for gameplay, shes rogue through and through. she just happens to be a rogue whos particularly good at fighting. currently using the Shortsword of First Blood and the Sword of Lifestealing, as well as a really cool cloak and that sick drow hood (not pictured here)

I actually never really thought of them like that, that's a damn good question, um-

Let's see..

Fern :

Lost her simple mouse family in a storm, then was found by a couple, who owned an orphanage

Grew up in a supportive environment, that she left by choice

Travelled a lot, made many friends and became completely comfortable with herself, loneliness and her oddities

Settled down in Moominvalley because she felt she's meant to be there

Despite her shyness and still lingering insecurities, just wants to belong

Shaun:

For the first 300 years of his life, have never left his home and was thrust into a really demanding and important role

Was raised and trained to be the perfect right hand for the Imp

Rarely got to interact with people who weren't the elders, his brother or fellow imps asked to teach him

After finding out what being the right hand actually meant and lost the Imp to the sealing, felt completely helpless, lost, betrayed and disgusted with himself

Is in self-imposed exile, can't leave the country and acts like it doesn't bother him

Is in Moominvalley, because there's no place left

Both of them hang out with Sniff a bunch, not together, tho. Shaun isn't really that close with anyone, he's trying not get too attached, but Fern always encourages him to tag along and play with her and the moomin gang.

my theory on jax's parents

i've been sitting on this one for a long while and finally got the push to write this up. i want to write about this in the future, but there's bits here that have got to wait until cube corp releases, so... i'm just going to talk about it while i'm here.

anyway. as we all know, jax seems to be raised by arthur, and neither of them ever mention his parents.

so where. the fuck. are they.

spoiler alert: just between you and me, i think they're dead. not that it's confirmed or anything...

so... let's begin with a preword. the jax in my canon is 22, since unlike ace and the player, he doesn't have a canon-implied age. (this did not stop me from making fern 21.)

this makes him just slightly older than the meteorite strike on crater town, which happened 20 years ago. it's important to note this, because he needs to be alive for his parents to die in the aftermath of the meteorite strike.

whoops. did i just say that?

let's just change tracks for a bit.

arthur is training jax to be the next champion. that's quite obvious from the story, he says it outright, there isn't any question about that. but i think that originally, arthur wanted his own child to succeed him. it's also something to think about if you consider that he stepped down from the champion's seat before the events of the game, which prompts me to think that he wanted a successor before he stepped down, but he couldn't train jax in time bc jax was still too young.

so let's go with that: arthur intended for his child to succeed him as the next champion after he steps down. thus: arthur's child, and one of jax's parents, would likely be a ferociously strong trainer.

i'd like to think that they met someone while they were training or journeying, fell in love, eventually decided to marry them, and have a child. why didn't they decide to become champion? this is just a hc, but considering elias is Still there and the league hasn't found a replacement and arabella is working there because her dad doesn't make money... yeah, i think the league is kinda understaffed. hell, i make fern struggle with his champion duties, but even if arthur is a better fit for the role, being the champion's child means they would be able to see how harsh the role is on arthur. and maybe they don't really want to be the champion just yet, when arthur still can do his job well.

and they're still young, after all. they want to have a bit of fun in their life, journey around as a trainer, raise their kid with lots of care, then maybe go get that champion role once arthur's done his term.

so now, little jax is two years old. the meteorite has just been shattered over valley city, and the residents have been transported back to help clean up the town. volunteers and volunteer pokemon from nearby cities, like dresco town, are called to help with the restoration efforts.

and jax's parents are part of those volunteers, naturally. they're both pokemon trainers, after all.

and here's where it starts going to shit.

remember that two pokemon came down to earth with the meteor? jirachi was sealed away after the residents realised its power, but another pokemon landed a little to the northeast.

and deoxys is powerful. pksp red, one of the strongest trainers, if not the strongest in the series, is almost powerless against deoxys when he first battles it. it takes him a bit of a bond with a rogue mewtwo and several tough battles, some difficult enough to shatter his mentality, to defeat it, and even then, it's an uphill struggle for him.

that's the pokemon that jax's parents find: a ridiculously strong pokemon from outer space that nobody's seen or recorded before. remember, it immediately fights you if you talk to it, so i suppose... they fight. and if they can see the utter destruction that could come out of deoxys's power, there's no way they're letting that pokemon get to the town, where unarmed people are working on clearing the rubble. so they fight, and they fight, but deoxys is strong, and clearly not even two people are a good enough fight against it, and soon their pokemon are worn out and deoxys's attacks are injuring the pair themselves.

they put together a plan. one holds off the strange pokemon from outer space — for the sake of my canon, this is the stronger one, arthur's daughter — and the other runs back to the town to alert the guardian of borrius, who is overseeing the restoration efforts. if anyone can beat this pokemon, it's the legendary aros.

and so jax's father flies back to crater town. he'd been persuaded to go, being more heavily injured by the fight, and desperately searches for aros, explains the situation, and immediately brings him to the crater where they found deoxys.

but it's too late by then.

they find jax's mother, barely conscious and mortally wounded, being fiercely protected by her pokemon who are only barely standing. aros thanks her, and with their combined efforts, barely manage to defeat deoxys and seal it in sleep. jax's father returns to his wife's side, only for her to sigh her last breaths before they can treat her wounds.

aros notices that jax's father's wounds can still be treated, but though aros hurries him back to town... perhaps the loss of his wife weighs too deeply on him, and he doesn't make it.

and jax, still only two years old, is left in the care of his grandfather.

his parents are called heroes — they fought so that crater town would not suffer a second disaster in quick succession, and that's why jax in my canon is so set on being a hero. his admiration for aros is also partly from seeing how he handled the incident, making sure that he didn't take the credit for holding off deoxys and ensuring that people wouldn't forget that jax's parents died in order to keep the town safe.

and, also, aros is basically the local superhero. he's cool as hell. no wonder he's kinda jax's idol.

anyway. i really want to write more about this concept, and there's a scene where i want jax to meet aros and for aros to tell him, properly, about his parents. that'll be the first time that i've ever written jax crying in canonverse, because hearing aros, his idol, apologise to him for not being able to save his parents and recount that they genuinely were heroes in his eyes is a lot to process. (it's also really funny considering that jax hasn't cried in front of fern, but he has cried in front of fern's dad.)

as a way of finishing this arc of jax's life, i really also want to suggest that after fern captures jirachi, jax tags along with him to fight deoxys.

and this fight — this is jax's fight. fern can tell that this jax is different from seeing him stare down deoxys across the crater. there's something twisted about the fact that jax is now facing it with his own partner, twenty years later.

jax, heightened by raw emotion, seems to fall back into his more reckless, daring tactics. he plays fern's hyper-offensive role, actually, and fern plays jax's support, making sure that jax doesn't run himself ragged, following up after his strikes, covering when they're in trouble. it's not like they made a name for themselves as an unstoppable duo for nothing.

the conclusion of this arc is jax's capture of deoxys, after a grueling battle that whittles at his strength and mental state. in a way, earning deoxys's respect, being able to capture it in a ball, and being able to say that he finally, finally defeated the pokemon that killed his parents, is a sort of closure that he probably didn't know he needed.

fun question!! i haven’t gotten to talk about fern’s queerness (i think while there’s a sort of implicit queerness abt some characters, fern is #confirmed) so these are just the ones that i often associate with her

Fern/Lorraine : because i like opposites attract and serious/sarcastic duos. I haven’t full sent this one as canon because for me it feels like it treads into kill your gays territory but I do like their banter and think it would be fun to write. Also angry kissing

Fern/Josie : similar but different! More on the crack-shippy side of things but Fern imbues Jo with a lot of newfound confidence, which in canon she takes and turns on Rosie, but there’s not enough shy girls making out in B-17s if you ask me

Fern/June : June baby I’m gonna hold ur hand when I tell you this — that protectiveness u feel over Fern is called bisexuality honey.

I think Fern in any relationship, wlw or het, kind of shines when it’s a personality that in some way either clashes or simply opposes her own. It’s why she and Dougie are just friends despite there being banter there — they’re really similar and I can’t see it becoming more than that in a serious capacity. I would also not be opposed to Fern & Tatty, because as much as I love Helen — Harrie has a crush and Fern is a girls’ girl.

Not Your Fault - Side B

"Dad was right… I really am useless…" Spark thought, as tears ran down their face, their body trembling as they continuously thought about what had happened that day in the lab.

“Spark? Are you okay?” Spark heard someone speak, from the low tones of their voice it must've been Fern. They lifted their head, realizing that, to their dismay, Fern was fully able to see their little show. They needed to try and salvage this.

“Oh. Hi, Fern, I was just about to head out” Spark said, not managing to muster up the energy to actually get up. They let out a sigh. “Sorry, I think I need a moment.”

"Fuck", Spark thought, "I'm crying in front of her, I have to stop crying, I need to get better, I don't want him to see me like this".

“Don’t worry, it’s okay. Can I sit here with you for a bit?” Fern said, which calmed Spark down a bit

“Sure, I don’t mind” Spark said, still hiding their face in their arms to not make a fuss of it any further.

Spark heard Fern sit down by their side, one of her wings slightly brushing against their shoulder, and tried to calm down and hold back their tears. It would be fine, they didn't have to explain anything to Fern.

“What happened?”

Shit. Well they just needed to formulate an answer and keep calm, it will be fine, they can do this rationally.

“If you don’t want to answer, that’s okay, I can just-”

“It’s my fault… I’m the one who blew up the lab…” Spark said, struggling to hold back tears as their mind once more ran through the events they caused.

“What? How? Wasn’t it Mist who misplaced that beaker?” Fern said, halting Spark's thoughts for a moment. Mist did misplace a beaker...

“Heh, I guess so. Even then, it’s still mostly my fault.” Spark stopped crying, and was able to steady their voice more. It wasn't fully their fault! They weren't useless due to this, the supposed perfect student also messed up!

“Ah, don’t worry about it then, if that dumbass didn’t do that the lab would still be intact, right?” Fern snickered as Spark felt a strong blow hit their shoulder, nearly falling over.

Spark didn’t respond at first, just quickly turned around with their eyes shut and hugged Fern. Their snout rested right next to Fern’s face, hands clasped together around his back. They felt his feathers lightly grazing their face and slowly opened their eyes, their blurry vision trying to focus on the classroom wall.

“Thanks, Fern, this really helps.” Spark said, their breathing steadying as they calmed down, letting out a few more tears.

“What? Oh, um… no problem!” Fern said awkwardly. A few moments later, Spark felt his hands slowly touch their shirt, as Fern returned their hug.

Man, Spark needed to get their shit together. They really shouldn't keep crying like this in front of their friends, Fern probably thought they were a wimp now. Still, all came out fine, Spark was a lot better now, and, well... the accident wasn't even TOTALLY their fault, so why should they beat themself up over this?

AAAAAAND SCENE
